Reviewing Performance

One of the essential ingredients for the effective management and evaluation of staff is the performance review (these are also known as appraisals).  Performance reviews help to develop individuals and improve organisational performance.  They provide a formal, recorded, regular review of an individual's performance, linked to organisational objectives, and a plan for future development.

Performance appraisals generally review each individual's performance against the organisation's objectives and standards for the year, agreed at the previous review meeting and agree the next set of targets for the following year.

Done well, performance appraisals are important for staff motivation, attitude and behaviour development, communicating and aligning individual and organisational aims, and fostering positive relationships between management and staff.  Done well, everyone wins - the organisation, the managers and the individual employees.

Unfortunately, many performance reviews are done very badly.  Both managers and employees tend to see the process as time-consuming, administratively painful and "something pink and fluffy that HR wants them to do".  So they try to avoid them or limp through inadequately.

 

Course outcomes

The ISPAL Performance Review workshop will give your managers the skills, knowledge of the process, the tactics and tips to carry out win-win performance reviews.  Among other helpful tips, it encourages delegates to meet their team members for regular one-to-one discussions, rather than leaving it to the end of the year.  The whole process will be shorter, faster, more relevant and much more enjoyable for all participants.
