BTEC Level 3 Advanced Award in Playground Operation, Maintenance & Inspection

The Level 3 BTEC Advanced Award in Playground Operation and Inspection is designed to give individuals the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for the safe operation and inspection of a play facility.

Unit 1: General safety and design in playground
Unit 2: Specific safety requirements for additional playground equipment
Unit 3: Safety requirements for impact absorbing playground surfacing
Unit 4: General guidance for playground installation, inspection, maintenance and operation.

Course outcomes

By the end of the course delegates should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the origins and implications of the standards
  • Identify and understand definitions contained in BS EN 1176 Part 1.
  • Establish the general requirements for material selection used in manufacturing
  • Examine the main areas of protection against falling and entrapment
  • Interpret correct zones and/or free spaces in relation to individual terms of playground equipment
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the testing processes involved in the certification of equipment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the additional requirements for swings contained in BS EN 1176 Part 2
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the additional requirements for slides contained in BS EN 1176 Part 3
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the additional requirements for runways contained in BS EN 1176 Part 4
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the additional requirements for carousels contained in BS EN 1176 Part 5
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the additional requirements for rockers contained in BS EN 1176 Part 6
  • Demonstrate knowledge in safety awareness
  • Establish the general requirement for the operation of a playground
  • Understand the requirement for obtaining pre-contract and contract information from suppliers
  • Establish the general requirements for inspection and maintenance
  • Demonstrate a knowledge for the requirement of inspection schedules
  • To identify requirements for safe installation
  • Demonstrate a basic knowledge in the test procedures and requirements for certifying safety surfacing
  • Demonstrating knowledge as to the requirements of a safety surface.

Course duration

  • 3 Days + additional hours for completion of the project.

Revalidation period

  • Annual verification, 3 yearly update of material.
